irssi through an ssh tunnel

Using irssi on your local desktop to connect to an IRC server behind a firewall is easy using an ssh tunnel, providing you have ssh access through the firewall.

First open the ssh tunnel:

ssh -L 6667:irc_server:6667 user@remote.host.com

Then in another terminal on your local machine, type:

irssi -c localhost

irssi will connect to localhost on port 6667 – expecting to find an IRC server, ssh will redirect the localhost:6667 connection to irc_server:6667 through the ssh tunnel.
